Nimlok turn from blue to green for the World Environment Day 2007

World Environment Day was established in 1972. It is commemorated each year on the 5th June stimulating worldwide awareness of the environment.

The selected slogan for 2007 is ‘Melting Ice – A Hot Topic?’ in support of the International Polar Year. The Polar Regions are remote areas of the Earth that have profound significance for the Earth’s climate and ultimately environments, ecosystems and human society. However we still remain remarkably ignorant of the many aspects of how polar climate operates and its interaction with polar environments.

The WED theme selected for 2007 focuses on the effects that climate change is having on polar eco systems and communities, and the ensuing consequences around the world.

The main international celebrations are being held in Norway but anyone can take part in WED. It is a day to promote understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues.

Nimlok Ltd, leading exhibition and display stand solutions provider worldwide, have been recycling since their foundation in 1970. Reusability has been a fundamental feature of all Nimlok’s products. The Nimlok way is modular, reconfigurable solutions; engineered from the start to be used again and again even as requirement evolves.

Testament to the reusability of Nimlok products is the very large quantity of Nimlok equipment still in daily use after 20 or 30 years.

At the end of their long ‘useful life’ Nimlok products continue to be environmentally sound as they are manufactured using 80% recyclable material. Nimlok endeavours to ensure maximum recyclability of unwanted products by offering to dispose of any equipment no longer wanted by clients, as part of the original purchase contract.

Under the leadership of Joanne Tong, Nimlok has embarked on the road to formal certification under the internationally recognised environmental standard ISO14001. Full compliance and certification is on schedule for completion at the end of 2007.

Managing Director of Nimlok, Tim Perutz, is part of a working committee at the Exhibition Trade Association who have been tasked with a drafting a standard to ensure environmental sustainability and responsibility within the entire events field. This is the first time that the events industry has had an environmental standard and naturally Nimlok are working hard to set and example and with full and early compliance.

Nimlok employ 120 members of staff and approximately 90% drive into work alone despite many of the staff members living in the same town. Joanne, who is heading up the environmental project at Nimlok, has asked staff to consider car sharing or biking to work for the WED in the hope that this may continue after the event to so we can continue to help with the climate change. Nimlok are also creating awareness internally by asking all members of staff to come to work wearing a green item of clothing. Joanne Tong of Nimlok comments; “We wanted to do something as a team that was fun and that created awareness of the environmental issues we are all facing. Being dressed in green might prompt us to think more ‘green’ as we go about our daily tasks”.
